Key Vocabulary for Emergencies

English Japanese Romaji
I am injured. 怪我をしました。 Kega o shimashita.
Someone has collapsed. 誰かが倒れました。 Dareka ga taoremashita.
There is a car accident. 交通事故です。 Kōtsū jiko desu.
I don't understand Japanese. 日本語がわかりません。 Nihongo ga wakarimasen.

Natural Disaster Preparedness & Response

Japan is prone to natural disasters like earthquakes and typhoons. Preparation is key.

Earthquakes (地震 - Jishin)

  1. During the shaking: DROP, COVER, HOLD ON.
    • Get under a sturdy desk or table.
    • Protect your head and neck with your arms.
    • If no cover is available, move to an interior corner of the room. Stay away from windows.
  2. After the shaking stops:
    • Check for injuries.
    • Turn off the gas at the main valve to prevent fires.
    • Open a door or window to ensure an exit route.
    • Listen to official news on TV or radio for information and evacuation orders. Do not rely on rumors.
    • If a major earthquake occurs near the coast, evacuate to higher ground immediately due to tsunami risk.

Typhoons (台風 - Taifū)

  1. Bring any loose items from your balcony or yard inside (laundry poles, plants, etc.).
  2. Charge all your electronic devices and have a portable battery ready.
  3. Stock up on some non-perishable food and water.
  4. Stay indoors and away from windows.
  5. Be aware that public transportation may be suspended. Check train/bus websites for updates.

Build an Emergency Kit & Stay Informed

  • Emergency Kit: Prepare a backpack with water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, a portable radio, a first-aid kit, copies of important documents (passport, residence card), and some cash.
  • Helpful Apps: Download apps like "Safety tips" (from the Japan Tourism Agency) and "Yurekuru Call" for earthquake early warnings in English.
  • Evacuation Site: Check your local city/ward office website to find your designated evacuation site (避難所 - hinanjo).

Medical Assistance

Non-Life-Threatening Issues

For urgent but not life-threatening issues outside of normal clinic hours, you can search for a local night/holiday clinic. Use search terms like 「[Your City Name] 夜間救急」 ([Your City Name] yakan kyūkyū) to find options.

Embassy & Consular Support

In a serious emergency (e.g., you are arrested, are a victim of a major crime, or have lost your passport), you can contact your home country's embassy or consulate. They can:

  • Provide advice and support.
  • Issue emergency travel documents.
  • Provide a list of local doctors or lawyers.

They cannot pay your medical bills, give you legal advice, or get you out of jail.
